Bridges

Crowns are an excellent dental technique if you have one tooth that needs repairing. However, there are also options for those who have more than one tooth that require some restoration. Bridges are incredibly hard-wearing, due to their precious metal base, which gives them a strong and sturdy structure. But, bridges can often be fitted with porcelain at the base to give them the look of natural and healthy teeth, which is ideal if the teeth to be repaired or replaced are in the smile line. A bridge helps to strengthen the damaged teeth, and is an excellent option for those who would prefer no hassle when chewing and eating – bridges are fixed, and cannot come loose or be taken out.

If you have several teeth next to each other that are missing, bridges can also be combined with our implant treatment. Having a bridge fitted to an implant in the jawbone is a safe and effective way of restoring your smile, without the hassle of dentures. Looking after a bridge is simple – take excellent care when performing your twice daily dental hygiene routines, to ensure your mouth stays plaque-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bridges are dental restoration fixtures that replace damaged, decayed, or missing teeth – particularly when you have one or more adjacent to each other. Bridges require healthy teeth surrounding the area to be treated, so that it can be fitted securely. Otherwise, bridges can also be attached to dental implants in the jawbone, requiring no healthy teeth for attachment.

The starting point for our dental team is to assess your mouth, and evaluate whether a dental bridge is the right option for you. Our highly qualified team will examine your mouth and take x-rays of the teeth and jawbone, to get a thorough understanding of your mouth to make the most effective decision. We will discuss all suitable options with you, including the type and design of bridge that would best suit your requirements, so that you can make an informed decision.

At your first bridge appointment, we will need to prepare the healthy teeth that will hold your bridge in place. These are called abutment teeth, and it is necessary to shape these properly under local anesthetic. After shaping your abutment teeth and ensuring your comfort, we will then take an impression of your mouth so that a suitable, custom bridge can be constructed. We will match the bridge to your natural tooth colour, and so will take a colour sample at this point.

At a second appointment, your permanent bridge will be fitted. We will usually use local anesthetic throughout the fitting procedure, just to ensure minimal discomfort. We will thoroughly clean the teeth below and around the bridge, and then use dental cement to fix the bridge onto the abutment teeth. We will follow the fitting with an assessment on your bite, so that you know the bridge is comfortable in its new position.
