Fluoride applications are a safe and effective way to safeguard growing teeth from developing decay and plaque, that left-untreated would cause lasting damage to the tooth’s protective enamel. The fluoride is carefully painted onto the teeth by our experienced dental practitioners, which helps to mineralise the teeth, helping them to grow stronger than if left untreated. Fissure sealants can also be used to prevent decay on children’s teeth. These are tooth-coloured applications that are applied to teeth used to bite and chew, providing the teeth with a shield against plaque build up and decay.
Treating children from an early age allows our dental team to watch and assess your child’s teeth as they grow, meaning that we can safely and efficiently spot early signs of underbites, crossbites or overbites developing. Fluoride also helps to strengthen the enamel of the tooth decreasing your child’s chances of developing sensitivity. Strong enamel is essential for the growth and maintenance of healthy teeth, long into adulthood.
We can also prevent decay by treating your child’s teeth with fissure sealants. A thin, tooth-coloured layer of resin sealant should be applied by one of our certified dentists to children’s teeth as early as they erupt, to prevent food and bacteria from lodging in the molars and premolars. Build up of food and bacteria in these teeth is difficult to remove by regular at-home brushing, so fissure sealants are an essential treatment to prevent decay. They usually last around ten years, and we will always assess fissure sealants at every routine appointment.
